The Story of Eve, Part I: The Beginning

My name is Eve. I am a typical 17 year old from a small town in Indiana. My parents are named Doug and Julie. I am a straight A student and play sports. I am on the field hockey team and run track.

My mom is distant and not the nicest person. My dad pushes me to do well at everything, from grades to sports. He expects me to be perfect. I do excel at everything so I guess I should be happy. I'm not though. I have no interest in what my future holds. I already have my pick of colleges and I just don't care. I am just another girl like all the rest. Smart. Athletic. BORING!
I need a drastic change. I need to be unique. What can I do? I guess I can start by getting a different hairstyle? Why not? Hair grows back right? So on Saturday, I asked my dad to drop me off at the mall. There was a hair salon and even a barbershop there. It's downtown, so parking sucks. He agreed to drop me off.

Dad: "Eve, don't get anything silly done to your hair. It's part of the package and you look the part."

Me: "Part? What part?"

Dad: "An attractive young white woman. It gives you an advantage. Don't squander it!"

My dad is a bit of a racist. So is mom. It pisses me off. Why does any of this matter? After dropping me off, his words were echoing in my head and it just got me madder and madder. It's MY hair! I can do whatever I want. I will show him.

I walked toward the salon at the mall. The barbershop was next door. I turned and walked into the BLACK barbershop. I was not only the only woman in there but also the only white person. I was shocked but it felt so cool.

Barber: "You lost? Salon is next door."

Me: "No, sir. I want a hair CUT. And I want a cut that I think you can do."

Barber: "Is that right? What cut? I can do any cut you want."

Me: "I want a hightop afro fade!"

Barber: "But you are white?"

Me: "I am aware of that. So you can't do one? I thought you could do any cut. Guess not."

Barber: "Sit down. You are getting a hightop fade."

I sat down and got ready for the change of a lifetime.
